Carretera Austral Camper Itinerary (18 Days)

Days 1-2: Puerto Montt – Chaitén (200 km + ferry)


The journey begins in Puerto Montt, the gateway to Patagonia. From here, take a ferry to Chaitén, a small town surrounded by mountains and ancient forests.


  • Attractions: Pumalín Douglas Tompkins Park, waterfalls, volcano hikes.

  • Recommended Camping: Ventisquero Campground, with nature access and basic services.


Days 3-4: Chaitén – Puyuhuapi (160 km)

Following a scenic route along fjords and mountains, you’ll reach Puyuhuapi, a charming village with German influence, known for its hot springs and breathtaking landscapes.


  • Attractions: Puyuhuapi Hot Springs, fjords, kayaking.

  • Recommended Camping: El Sauce Campground, surrounded by forests and a lake.


Days 5-6: Puyuhuapi – Coyhaique (220 km)

Entering the heart of Patagonia, this stretch is filled with winding roads and spectacular views. Coyhaique, the regional capital, offers urban comforts before heading further south.


  • Attractions: Queulat National Park, Hanging Glacier, artisan markets.

  • Recommended Camping: Alborada Campground, ideal for a restful stop.


Days 7-8: Coyhaique – Puerto Río Tranquilo (220 km)

From Coyhaique, head towards General Carrera Lake, one of the largest in South America. Puerto Río Tranquilo is the launching point for one of Chile’s most impressive natural wonders.

Days 9-10: Puerto Río Tranquilo – Cochrane (115 km)

This part of the journey takes you into wilder Patagonia, reaching Cochrane, a town surrounded by mountains and crystal-clear rivers.

Days 11-12: Cochrane – Caleta Tortel (130 km)

Days 13-14: Caleta Tortel – Villa O'Higgins (150 km)

The final stretch takes you to Villa O’Higgins, the last town on the Carretera Austral, and the starting point for glacier explorations.

  • Recommended Camping: El Mosco Campground, a favorite among travelers.


Days 15-16: Villa O’Higgins – Coyhaique (370 km)

The journey back begins with a long but scenic drive northward. Stopping in Coyhaique again allows for rest and resupply before continuing the return trip.


  • Attractions: More time for hiking and exploring regional cuisine.

  • Recommended Camping: Alborada Campground.


Days 17-18: Coyhaique – Puerto Montt (650 km + ferry)

The final leg takes you back to Puerto Montt, allowing for any additional stops or detours along the way. Enjoy the last views of Patagonia before concluding the adventure.

  • Recommended Camping: Near Puerto Montt before departure.
